A quick Google or search through Amazon will present you with a ton of Ideas for adding a personal touch to your gift. The problem is these put the onus on you to understand what your gamer will find amusing. Do they really want to be staring at a mouse pad or coffee mug with their mug on it? Often what gamers find amusing is a subtle reference to a private joke among the gaming community. Games these days even have individual communities that build up around them. These communities are usually very passionate about their game and can hold a grudge or place things on a pedestal for years!

A classic example of a gaming community with an immortalised reference would be the WoW community (World of Warcraft) and their love for Leeroy Jenkins (Leeeeeeeeeeeeeroy!). The game developers even added an achievement in the game to celebrate this one!

If you know your gamers favourite game/s it might be worth doing a little research into the community around it and looking for the associated memes or events. You can then use that to stylize your gift perfectly and it’ll be guaranteed to get a laugh, get used and it’ll be subtle enough they won’t hate it and shove it in a drawer for the next 10 years.

In all honesty we have thought long and hard about this one and we’re struggling with it too.

People seem to love a good old bit of novelty. While it’s meaning might be open to some interpretation we’re sitting in the camp that imagines anything novelty to be used once or twice for a bit of fun, then discarded or hidden away. Seems like a shame to us! If your gift is in danger of being classed as novelty when that wasn’t the intention we might have just the thing in the shop with loads of well loved gifts to choose from.

While sitting down to enjoy quick encounter with their new board game we suggest grabbing a notebook to accompany the journey. Handy for jotting down scores, info and rules if needed! Not really funny but defiantly FUN!

Artwork that combines creativity and humour in the form of stickers, prints or posters could be a great way to point out their passion for gaming while adding a touch of fun. Creating something that features iconic gaming characters in amusing scenarios could be a real winner with the right gamer. The previous point still stands however, you really need to know what games they play and are interested in first. Then do a little digging to find the right pic or meme for their chosen game. We think the standard “Caution Gamer” wall art is cringy and shows zero thought or understanding of gaming as a pastime.

For young gamers

Age-appropriate gifts can be tricky to decide on but most kids will get some good use out of a decent backpack or water bottle for school. If you want something a little more fun, again you’ll really need to be in the know about the current games being played.
